Hospice Care for Terminally Ill

Hospice care is an option for people that have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. It involves a focus on “comfort-oriented care” aimed at improving their level of comfort in their final months. As such, most hospice care takes place at the individual’s home instead of a nursing home or assisted living facility. This type of care focuses on pain relief and symptom alleviation, but is also attentive to patient’s emotional, social and even spiritual needs.  Hospice care helps the patient to live well while in-program by providing for their every need and encouraging them to be positive. Family members and friends are involved, as well as social workers, clergy and speech, physical, and occupational therapists. Some of the services provided by hospice care are:

  • Pain & symptom management
  • Assistance with emotional, spiritual, psychological and social needs
  • Drugs, medical supplies and equipment
  • Training for family care-givers
  • Speech, physical & occupational therapy
  • Arrangements for respite care
  • Bereavement counseling for surviving family and friends
  • Help with daily chores and other daily activities
  • Experienced counsel for end-of-life decisions
  • 24- hour on call availability

If you or a loved one may be in need of hospice care, please call Lower Cape Fear Hospice at 1-800-207-6908 or visit their website at www.hospiceandlifecarecenter.org.
